Our
Story
B E G I N N I N G S
Back in 2020 the BigDoor was just the dream of a small, new church group in the Walkerton area. They wanted a place to show the love and care of God. The gospel on display. So they asked the municipality where help was needed and the need was shared for a safe place for teens to gather. Not long after, this little building with a big door (just a garage) was purchased as multi-purpose community hub offering both religious and non-religious programming so that everyone could receive care.
C O M F O R T M E A L S
Barb Vandenbor (she's famous) asked our group if we'd be willing to host a warm lunch. She had been bringing food to those who would appreciate a warm meal living in a motel but needed a better spot. We said, "sure", and set up a table while we were still under construction. Since that first Tuesday back in 2022, the awesome team of volunteers at the BigDoor have not missed one week.
Marty from the YMCA stopped by one time and that started local agencies coming to lunch and providing care. Today we have Bruce County housing, a paramedic, mental health resources from the CMHA, addictions help, ID clinics, financial/social/medical help. Even a hairdresser sometimes :)
S T U D E N T C A F E
In the fall of 2024 we launched the 326cafe for High School Students. We regularly hosts classes from our local schools and educate them about the needs in the area and how they can use the BigDoor.
T O B E C O N T I N U E D
Our first goal was to simply be a multi-purpose community hub that was truly helpful. Although we have some established programs, we want to be stay nimble as people's needs change. One of our strengths is that we are relatively small so we can pivot. We enjoy working closely with families and we want to stay flexible to truly help and see meaningful change.
